What goes into an outdoor fireplace

A masonry fireplace is a stack of parts that carries the smoke from the fire to the sky. The drawing cuts a typical one through its center; the only line coming in from outside is the gas, for a gas log or burner set.

Built in place, or bought and set down

Two different things, for two different yards. Neither is the right answer for everyone.

Bought and set down

A chiminea, a steel fire bowl or a manufactured fireplace unit you place in the yard.

  • Its maker lists its clearances and its fuel
  • It can be moved, or go with you
  • Its size and look are the model you choose

Built in place

A masonry fireplace built on a footing, as part of the yard and its walls.

  • Its size, finish and fuel are settled with you
  • It is work the license words name: fireplaces
  • A gas line for it is a licensed trade of its own

Wood or gas, under Maricopa County's burn rules

The fuel decides more than the look, because the county limits when wood may burn.

What the county's rules say

  • On a No Burn Day, only gaseous fuels, gas logs included, may burn in a fireplace, woodstove or chimenea.
  • From May 1 to September 30, the rules for Area A list fires for warmth and for recreation, and wood-burning chimeneas and outdoor pits, among the fires prohibited.
  • Each day's status is on the county's Burning Activities page.

A gas log or burner set needs a gas line. In the City of Phoenix, new gas piping needs a permit, an inspection and a clearance before the gas is turned on, and the line is run by a licensed trade of its own. Who does it on your job is settled with you at the first contact.

With wood, the county's limits decide when you can light it; gas logs may burn on a No Burn Day too. Either way the firebox, the smoke chamber and the chimney are the masonry the license names.

Fire pits

Big B's builds custom BBQ islands and outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, fire pits, planters and decorative walls.

Whether a fire pit fits your plan is settled with you at the first contact. Who holds the license, and how to check it, is on about Big B's. Pairing a fireplace with a grill counter? See BBQ islands, or our recent work.

Clearance, heat, burn days and cost

How far does an outdoor fireplace need to be from a house?

There is no one distance. It is set by the fireplace's listed clearances, when it is a manufactured unit, and by your city's building and fire code, and it is checked for your yard at the first contact.

Do outdoor fireplaces give off a lot of heat?

It depends on the firebox, the fuel and where people sit. A fireplace sends its heat out through its opening, so the seats in front of it are the warm ones; a fire pit sends heat all around it.

Can I burn wood in a fire pit or outdoor fireplace in Maricopa County?

On a No Burn Day, only gaseous fuels, gas logs included, may burn in a fireplace, woodstove or chimenea. From May 1 to September 30, the county's rules for Area A list fires for warmth and for recreation, and wood-burning chimeneas and outdoor pits, among the fires prohibited.

The county posts each day's status on its Burning Activities page.

How much does it cost to put in an outdoor fireplace?

No price is published, because the number turns on the fireplace itself: its size and finish, wood or gas, a gas line run by a licensed trade with a city permit where one is required, and any HOA review. The first step is a call or the short form.
